Nashville averages about 47 inches of rain a year, and the spring storm season delivers a lot of it in bursts. A March front can put an inch on the roof in under an hour. On a two-story house in Crieve Hall or Donelson that means several hundred gallons arriving at one back gutter in a few minutes, and a 5-inch gutter with a single 2x3 downspout at one end simply can't move it. The water goes over the front lip, onto the deck, and down to the crawl space vents.
Then there is the ground. Most of Davidson County sits on thin clay soil over limestone, and the terrain rolls. A downspout dumping at the corner of a house on a sloped lot in Green Hills or Bellevue sends water straight along the foundation wall and under the house. Crawl-space moisture, block walls that weep in April, and the musty smell that shows up every spring usually trace back to a downspout that ends eighteen inches from the wall.
The third factor is how much new housing there is. Thousands of homes went up across Nashville, Antioch, Nolensville, Mt. Juliet and Spring Hill in the last ten years, and nearly all of them got the cheapest gutter that would pass a final walk-through: thin aluminum, too few downspouts, corners sealed in a hurry, no extensions. Those systems are failing at five and six years old, not twenty-five. We see more of them than we see 1960s ranch houses with original gutters.
Winter is the one thing Nashville is mostly spared. An ice storm every few years will load a gutter with frozen water and pull hangers out of soft fascia, but ice dams and heat cables are not part of normal life here, and we won't sell you a solution for a problem the climate doesn't give you.

Resealing a corner or end cap sits at the low end; re-hanging a long sagging run, replacing a downspout and adding a second one on a big roof is toward the top. When more than a third of the system needs work, replacement is usually the better spend, and the estimate will say so.

My house is only four years old. Why are the gutters already failing?
Because builder-grade gutters are priced to pass inspection, not to last. Thin aluminum, hangers spaced too far apart, one small downspout on a long run and corners sealed once and never checked. The fix is usually a downspout upgrade and a re-hang, sometimes a partial replacement, and it's cheaper than fighting the builder's warranty department.
Do I need 6-inch gutters in Nashville?
On two-story homes with big roof planes draining to one run, steep roofs, and anywhere a valley dumps two roof sections into one spot, yes. A 6-inch gutter with 3x4 downspouts carries roughly 40% more water than a 5-inch. On a modest single-story roof, 5-inch with 3x4 downspouts is usually enough for our storms.
Do you fix gutters after wind or ice damage?
Yes. Wind-pulled runs, kinked sections and downspouts on the lawn are the usual spring and late-fall calls, and ice-loaded gutters that pulled their hangers show up after the occasional winter storm. We photograph everything for your insurance claim, secure what can be secured, and quote the repair or replacement in writing.
